—by a Children’s Author Who’s Read More Picture Books Than Emails This Week

Hi there! I’m a children’s author, which means I live in a world where talking animals solve mysteries and bedtime is negotiable.
But beyond the magic, here’s something I swear by (and do daily): reading to kids.
Here’s why I think it’s the secret sauce to raising curious, kind, and confident little humans:
1. Their Brains Are on Fire (In a Good Way!)
Reading lights up parts of a child’s brain like fireworks. Words, rhythm, rhymes—it’s like a mini mental workout, minus the sweat.
2. Vocabulary = Superpower
Want your toddler to drop the word “magnificent” at dinner? Read to them. Books casually sneak in words we don’t use every day. (I recently heard my 5-year-old say “amazing adventure.” Still not over it.)
3. Storytime = Bonding Time
Whether it’s 5 minutes or 30, those snuggly, shared reading moments create a sense of safety and closeness that lasts far beyond the last page.
4. Imagination Goes BOOM
Books teach kids how to dream bigger. Pirates can be polite. Princesses can tame dinosaurs. (Yes, it exists.)
5. It Preps Them for School Without Feeling Like School
Reading builds attention span, listening skills, and comprehension—all fancy words for “They’ll rock at learning later.”
6. It Teaches Patience (Sort of…)
Waiting to turn the page? Listening instead of interrupting? These are very advanced skills in the toddler world. Books sneakily help.
7. Empathy Grows Here
When kids meet characters who are different from them—or feel the same things—they start to understand the big, wide world in such a beautiful way.
Reading every day isn’t about perfection but about connection. So whether your kiddo wants the same book 11 times or you’re both giggling at a goat in pajamas, it counts.
Keep reading, keep imagining. The stories we share today become the hearts they carry tomorrow.
